Anderson’s Appearances, which relates the story of an African American bellhop who is tried and exonerated of killing a white woman, debuted on Broadway in 1925. Wilson’s Meek Mose (1928), which concerns an African American activist whose community loses faith in him after he is unsuccessful in his attempts to help them retain the land from which they are being forced to move by white citizens who want the land for their own use, was followed in 1929 by Thurman’s Harlem, which is a sordid depiction of life in Harlem.
Indeed the BOMC influenced the autobiography’s publication. When the publishing company received Wright’s manuscript that was titled American Hunger, it submitted the manuscript to the BOMC for selection consideration. The BOMC accepted the book only after the publisher agreed to delete part 2, “The Horror and the Glory,” which was an account of Wright’s years in Chicago. Thus in 1945, only part 1, “Southern Nights” (later titled Black Boy by Wright) was published. “The Horror and the Glory” was published posthumously in 1977 as American Hunger, and the complete autobiography was first published in 1991.
The poet Assotto Saint also founded his own Galiens Press to release, in addition to his work, two seminal anthologies of African American gay poetry, The Road before Us (1991) and Here to Dare (1992). For this new generation of gay African American writers, the goal of representing themselves as self-identified gay men required developing their own idiom and aesthetic tradition. —the coded act of finger popping to convey a variety of messages. In speaking out about a distinctive black gay selfhood that was not the same as the dominant media image of gays as middle-class whites, these writers also introduced a number of themes that would recur in the fiction of other writers in the 1990s and beyond.
